In 2009, Violence Transformed expanded once again, with exhibits including: the now annual Statehouse exhibit, the 2009 “Are You Ubuntu? Youth Transforming Violence” exhibit at Wheelock College’s Towne Art Gallery, a second year of “The Artist’s Voice” at RCC’s Media Arts Center, three successive exhibits at at the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists (“Violence Transformed: Artists on the Power of Art” , “The Ubuntu Quilt A& Story Circle” and, from October 2009 through January 2010, “The Hero’s Story: A Solo Exhibit of Works by Cullen Washington”; plus a Violence Transformed exhibit at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery in Cambridge, MA co-curated by Brenda Steinberg and Gail Bos, a first Children’s Hospital “Day of Remembrance” exhibit curated by Carol Daynard, and “Violence Transformed: Works by Urban Youth” curated by the Teen Curatorial Group of Cloud Place at the Cloud Foundation.HIGHLIGHTS: Clearly, a main highlight of this year was the rapid expansion of Violence Transformed to so many new and diverse venues, with Violence Transformed exhibits extending from early April into the first month of 2010. And in June, Barbara Hamm, Director of the Victims of Violence Program at the Cambridge Health Alliance (and a founding member of the core organizers of Violence Transformed) organized with the American Repertory Theater Institute for Advanced Theater Training a performance of play “Ajax in Iraq” with a follow up panel discussion with psychologist Jaine Darwin and representative actors in the performance.
