Stella Aguirre McGregor

McGregor has been an artist and cultural worker for over 25 years and a committed advocate for arts education. Her interest has been to explore the role of art in society, of art as an essential part of life and as a catalyst for social change. “I am passionate about work that is socially relevant, cross-cultural, trans-disciplinary and collaborative.
My work has allowed me to pursue contemporary art questions about the contrasts between inclusion and exclusion, majority and minority, center and periphery, and the marginalization of certain cultural groups in our society.”

Further, there is a clear emphasis on the processw of art-making rather than art as commodity. The teaching, planning, and research undertaken by artists and teens in the community are as vital as the exhibition or installation that may follow. The work does not limit itself to the traditional art media; it is an art that reaches out as well as inward. It can be found both at the site and in non-traditional public spaces.
“The URBANO project is an exciting continuation of my work: dealing with how art education provides us with the tools to better ourselves, to create a more egalitarian and just society, and through contemporary art address the pressing issues of our time.”

She served as Executive Director of the Cloud Foundation from 2003-2009 where she conceived and developed the acclaimed Teen Curatorial Program and Artists’ Workshops.

Previously she served as Program Manager for Individual Artists at the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC); was Arts Administrator for the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel project’s public art program; and founded and directed The Space, an award-winning Boston non-profit where she produced over 300 projects encompassing visual, performing, and public arts, with the participation of youth and community members. These programs received grants from the NEA, Pew Charitable Trusts, MCC, Andy Warhol Foundation, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding. She was named one of Boston’s Top 10 Women in the Arts in 2008.
